The Planer /Thicknesser
Used for the basic operations.
Planing a face on a rough or distorted wood, squaring an edge against
that face, and then thicknessing another face and edge parallel to
the originals.
The Planer
The first thing you'll notice when
approaching a surface planer is that it predominantly consists of a
surface table, a rotating cutting cylinder (traditionally with two or
three blades) and an adjustable side fence (normally set at 90 degree
to the surface table).
The workpiece is slowly pushed
along the table towards the cutting cylinder, whilst pressing against
the side fence for guidance. The cutting blades will remove the
unwanted wood from the workpiece (not normally more than 3mm in one
pass). It is important that the wood is fed in slowly, done
correctly, and a flat surface is produced.
However if the feed speed is too
high, it is possible that an undesired ripping effect is created. It
may be necessary to feed the work through more than once depending
upon the initial distortion.
Once a flat surface is obtained, it
can now be used as a reference face to form the other three surfaces.
This flat surface is pressed against the side fence, and the
operation repeated to form a second surface (or edge) square to the
original.
The Thicknesser
The Thicknesser enables the
operator to pass wood under the same cutter cylinder used by the
planer. The thicknesser table is adjusted to the desired height
beneath the cylinder, so that when the previously planed surface of
wood is moved along it, the blades cut down to the set calibrated
height, producing a constant thickness.
This thicknessing process is
usually motor driven, and roller in the machine allow the wood to be
self fed along the thicknessing table at the correct speed.
